Specialty: Halwa was first crafted by Rajput cooks hired by the zamindar of Chokkampatti, a village near Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. After being impressed by the sweets he sampled in Kasi, the zamindar requested the cooks to recreate them in his palace. Their success led one of the cooks, Jegan Singh, to settle in Tirunelveli and establish the now-famous Lakshmi Vilas shop.
